Manipulation happens every day. Most of us have become so accustomed to it that we just unconsciously vet for it in every conversation we have and look for it in all newspaper and magazine articles we read.
I used to have a high school teacher who often said to believe ten percent of what you hear and read and about fifty percent of what you see with your own eyes. That teacher was sadly correct.
There are many techniques used for manipulation. Each has its own level of success. It can be done financially/economically, by ballot box, through children, through academia and special interest studies by professors, by planting specific people at meetings, brute force, ....there are countless ways to do it.
Politicians are particularly good at it. Among their manipulation weapons in their arsenal is "noise". Simple, but effective. They have created a couple of hot button issues. Abortion is one of them. They keep screaming pro choice! Pro choice! It is my body! -- Ok, fine. Your choice. Your body. But MY money. Pay for it yourself. Response? Bigot! Racist!
Of course, we are seeing multiple techniques applied in that last scenario. Name calling and character attacks are a particular favorite because often people with ethics and morals and values and a conscience will bow down to it just because they are nice people and do not want to have the stigma of those terrible traits. I suggest following up their vitriol with a simple, "Why thank you for telling me that you feel like you can hold my reputation and my soul hostage! Thank you for showing me who you are." Then turn away and talk to someone with at least an ounce of decency.
The noise though...that is so obvious but somehow also effective. It is critically important when they are making noise to not let them get away with it. Right now the noise happens to be about gun control. By stirring up the anti gun rights pot, the Dems (socialists) are effectively avoiding all other issues. Do not allow candidates to step away from other issues. They will do their best to pivot back to the noise to avoid other issues, but stay on top of them. If they want to talk once or twice about their opponents relationships and rumored affairs, let them. But if they continue to use that as one of their pillars of their campaign, call them out on it. Don't they have any other issues to discuss? Don't they know anything else?
Once in awhile, I will find a bit of information on some of the techniques that are used. Some are even so revered that they literally have training events and conferences to learn them. Sad, but true. People have such a need to "get their way", they will do anything and everything to get it. In any case, I will scribble a bit about some of them here and let you look into them further. Educate yourself what people do to manipulate on a personal level as well as to groups of people.
